Many people are surprised, considering the company's long and solid history, by the dynamic and innovative culture they find at Schroders. It's true, we are very proud of our trusted heritage, but our strong reputation is based equally upon our advanced thinking – our ability to anticipate, meet, and often create, market demand.
We have a strong focus on teamwork, recognising that the best ideas are often a result of more than one different viewpoint coming together. Innovative ideas are encouraged and, thanks to our meritocratic culture, they are also recognised and rewarded.
We also believe in the importance of regular communication with our people. The Chief Executive and Group Management Committee host regular meetings with different teams across the business, with open and lively question-and-answer sessions. Technology is further enabling the opportunity for two-way communication, with live webcasts and the recent introduction of blogs, enabling employees to pose questions directly to the senior management team.
Our physical environment helps to foster an unusually collaborative culture too. Although we have three different buildings in London, they are actually very close to each other – so anyone in the UK business is only ever a short walk from your desk. That helps to explain why the atmosphere here is much friendlier and more personal than you could expect to find in many big corporate firms.
The style of working is also markedly different. This is undoubtedly a demanding place to pursue a career, so we avoid creating unnecessary pressure. We don’t believe in micro-managing every last detail, and our people have more important things to focus on than putting in ‘face time’ after hours. Instead, we prefer to trust our people’s intelligence, to encourage their interests – and to be flexible enough to accommodate their differing priorities. It’s all part of creating a supportive culture where everyone can work hard and enjoy the rewards.
