Summer Internships
I enjoyed working in a company with such a strong identity and heritage. Everyone within Schroders is aware of the values and standards they represent, which is strongly reflected in the atmosphere. While there is a great sense of history at Schroders, the culture is strongly forward-thinking, and everybody is very open to new ideas and opinions . . . even from an intern. I was surprised how friendly the atmosphere was, and how willing everybody was to take the time to talk and show interest in my development. Although I was surrounded by experienced professionals I never felt worried about asking questions.
Working within distribution I have been lucky enough to gain exposure to all parts of the business. My day-to-day activities have been extremely varied, ranging from researching the investment challenges of the future, to examining the external perceptions of key competitors. I especially enjoyed being very quickly made responsible for my own work; on the first day at my desk I was asked to prepare and send out an international press release. In addition to having my own projects to complete I was also involved with the daily activities of the team, which gave me a great understanding of what life at Schroders is like.
Having interviewed for other companies in the industry, and heard the usual horror stories, I was surprised to find the atmosphere at Schroders friendly and supportive. Despite the company's significant industry presence, it has a relatively small workforce so there is plenty of communication within and between teams. I was involved with the day-to-day running of the team from the outset, and everyone was pleased to get new ideas and opinions. It was very rewarding to be able to make a contribution in such a short space of time. More generally, the internship programme has given us the opportunity to learn about different areas of the business and been really good fun as well.
I worked in the international equities team, and was told to come up with a project in an under-researched area that would stimulate new investment ideas. Having recently worked on a Middle Eastern politics paper at university, I chose to work on a project on oil revenues and investment in the region. At the end of my internship, I produced a report and gave a presentation to my team on my findings, which will hopefully inform their future research and give them some new stocks to look into. It is really satisfying to think that the company might invest in the stocks I've chosen, and that I've really added value to the team.
