Mark Bridgeman, Head of Research

After completing the graduate training programme, I joined the UK Equity Research Department at the end of 1990, spending two years following the Pharmaceutical and Chemical sectors. In ’92 I moved to Sydney as part of our Australian Equity team, covering various sectors as an analyst as well as taking on fund management responsibilities. In ’95 I returned to London as fund manager responsible for South Africa in our Emerging Markets team – before moving to New York in ’98 to help build our Emerging Markets business in the US.

In 2000 I came back to the London office and took charge of all Emerging Market research, helping build our Global Research Platform. Two further progressions saw me made Head of Global Sector Research in ’02, then Global Head of Research in ’03. Since mid ’06, as well as overseeing Equity Research, I’ve increasingly worked with the Head of Equities in the overall management of our Equity business, which is the dominant business for Schroders.

My initial training and early experiences in the UK research team was crucial to my development as an investor. However, throughout my career I’ve been lucky enough to be able to learn from some great investors at Schroders. No one has all the answers and you gain knowledge and expertise from a great many people. The fact that half my first ten years at Schroders were spent overseas was also important to my development. Schroders is a truly global business and this international experience has been invaluable to me.

Over the last ten years I’ve been involved in hiring and developing talent for Schroders. One of the most satisfying things is seeing someone you backed and supported as a new analyst develop into a successful investor for Schroders. Schroders has all the advantages of being a reasonably large and global organisation with a long and stable history – but it also has a dynamic and entrepreneurial culture that rewards people who are successful and determined. Responsibility comes very early to those who show ability and Schroders will support you along the way with the training and development that you require.
