Summer Internships - Available Opportunities

We have a variety of internships available across the business including investment, accounting, communications and private banking. Please apply for one of the broad areas below. In the first question of your online assessment you will be asked to state your preferred role within your chosen area. A detailed job description for each opportunity can be found by clicking on the areas below:

Equities

As well as being set a clearly defined project for the duration of the internship you may also assist an analyst, sector team and/or fund manager in any of the following tasks:

  • Financial modelling including building and updating financial models or companies and sector screens.
  • Report writing; providing support to analysts in writing research notes and company meeting notes; attending a company meeting.
  • Assist with building and updating stock screen using datastream, Bloomberg and Reuters.

Fixed Income

You would be assisting an analyst, on any of the following tasks:

  • Financial modelling including building and updating financial models for specific companies.
  • Report writing, providing support to analysts in writing research notes and company meeting notes.
  • Sector reviews involving assisting a senior analyst in researching and preparing a presentation on a major credit
    sub-sector, for presentation to portfolio managers at a formal weekly credit meeting.

Multi-Asset

Over the last few years Schroders has invested considerably in its Multi-Asset group and we now have a team in excess of 30, dedicated to providing specialist investment solutions. The team is organised into five separate divisions: economics, multi-manager, structured investments, quantitative research, and asset allocation and portfolio construction. Each of these divisions operates as an autonomous unit, but work together in the construction and management of multi-asset portfolios. You would be involved in activities supporting these different divisions.

Property

Schroders has managed property investments since 1971 and as at September 2006 had £7.6 billion of gross property assets under management (excluding cross holdings). We manage a balanced UK tax exempt fund, a diversified
multi-manager vehicle, five sector specialist funds, three single asset development syndicates and two opportunity funds targeting absolute returns. We also manage approximately £1.3 billion of equity (including cross holdings) through our dedicated multi-manager team. The team invests through the UK and continental Europe in both unlisted property funds and listed property securities. Schroders’ property team consists of 70 individuals, experienced in property fund management, research and strategy, investor relations, finance and administration. The team also benefits from the significant analytical and other resources of the Schroders Group.

Quantitative Equity Products

The Quantitative Equity Products (QEP) team was founded in 1996 to research quantitative equity strategies and to develop a risk framework for portfolio management within Schroders. In January 2000 the team applied this expertise in strategy and risk into managing global equity portfolios and today QEP is exclusively dedicated to fund management. The team, of 16, manages a suite of risk-controlled equity portfolios: Global, North America and Japan. In October 2004 QEP developed an unconstrained Global Value fund, which aims to capture the higher long run returns using a unique approach to portfolio construction. The team has subsequently introduced global ex-US, ex-Japan and ex-Europe funds using the same unconstrained Value approach. With a successful track record, a stable team and rapidly growing assets (£3.6bn), the Quantitative Equity Products team has been targeted as a key growth area for Schroders.

Product Executive Support

You would have the opportunity to work closely with product executives that support the Emerging Market Debt funds that Schroders manages. Tasks you would be involved with would include:

  • Creating a database covering: Emerging Market & Commodity Macro economic ratios and Supply demand balances for all types of energy, metal and agricultural commodities. This would require you to work on the databases already used by the team and help improve the current organisation/utilisation of data (production of charts, statistical analysis etc.).
  • Identifying new sources of data (particularly for money, debt and credit indicators). Downloading this data from the internet or performing manual updates if necessary.
  • Working with the commodity team to create/improve tools needed to monitor roll yields, size of the markets

Investment Communications

Schroders' core business is excellent asset management. However, given the intangible nature of our product, it is essential that we communicate what we do and how we do it in a clear and consistent manner, benchmarking ourselves against the best in the market. The Investment Communications team is responsible for driving the quality of Schroders' investment communications to all key audiences around the world. While it is the guardian of external investment-related copy, we also work in a range of media to effectively communicate Schroders' investment views and how we are managing our clients' portfolios. Our audiences include all types of clients, from private investors to large institutions, consultants and the press. This is a unique opportunity for a summer intern.

A key part of your role will be to carry out a project looking at our current positioning in the market in terms of the quality of our materials. This will involve researching competitors' materials, and recommending enhancements to Schroders' materials. The role will provide a good overview of the asset management industry and a range of companies, understanding the different approaches of different firms in communicating with their clients.

Digital Team

You would assist the Digital team in the following tasks:

  • Liaison with business owners in relation to online content and digital marketing campaigns.
  • Assist with project work relating to Schroders' websites.
  • Assist with developing reports and measurement of campaign success metrics.

Successful candidates will possess excellent communication skills, being able to articulate a case in a clear, concise and decisive manner as well as being highly self motivated and able to display initiative.

Group Communications

You will work in the Group Communications team spending time working on PR and corporate communications. The team is responsible for all of Schroders' internal and external communications including employee communication, corporate announcements and media relations. You must be able to demonstrate strong written communication skills.

CRM Analyst

A shared Customer Relationship Management system has been rolled out to all Schroders' offices globally to allow Sales, Marketing and Client Service teams to manage client activities effectively. The Global CRM team is responsible for ongoing support and development of this function in Schroders. As part of your internship you would be allocated a specific business group and provide them with data analysis and other support tasks including:

  • General and ongoing user support for the application.
  • Process review and enhancement (in the areas of marketing and sales).
  • Development of reports for managing clients and contacts effectively.
  • Proactive analysis of data to support marketing and sales goals.

You must be able to demonstrate attention to detail and a genuine interest in the sales and marketing process.

Finance/Accounting

You would be working within our busy, multi-disciplinary Finance department. Some of your time will be spent in a line role, working on automated ledgers and assisting in the production of monthly management reporting, gaining experience of the Schroders business, as well as learning the various aspects of Finance.

There will also be opportunities for ad hoc project work. These roles are also aimed at helping you form a view as to whether a career in Finance and training as an accountant is right for you. You must be ambitious and have a high level of academic achievement to date. Strong quantitative and analytical problem-solving skills are important, coupled with excellent interpersonal and team-working skills.

At Schroders the personal qualities an individual brings with them are important. We are looking for individuals who have drive, energy and enthusiasm and are able to demonstrate creativity and initiative. Other skills that will be assessed at interview include: analytical skills, team working ability, communication and influencing skills as well as drive and tenacity.

Credit Risk

The Credit Team acts for the Schroders Group and is responsible for managing the credit risk arising within Schroder & Co, the London Private Bank in terms of client lending as well as Treasury counterparty exposures. The team also has a lesser role managing the principal risks within the Group’s Zurich and Guernsey based banks.

The role also includes reviewing the agency credit risk arising within the investment management business worldwide. The Group deals with approximately 400 counterparty groups in all markets ranging from large investment banks to small, under capitalised local brokers in emerging markets. You would be involved in some of the following tasks:

  • Preparing written credit reviews and proposals for a wide range of financial institutions for presentation to the Principal and Agency Risk Committees as well as ad hoc lending reviews.
  • Day-to-day monitoring of credit risk across the group.
  • Maintaining the database.
  • Liaising with other areas of the group where necessary to ensure credit risk is being considered in the launch of new products or funds.
